I don't use free anti virus software, am I nuts?

I don't use free anti virus software, am I nuts? All PC users are guilty of ignoring pop-up messages about updates and antiviruses, because they have a disquieting knack of popping up right when you're in the middle of something fundamental. You then set a remind for later, and ignore that too. However, at some point, anti virus software comes in handy, and choosing to live without is high risk. Or is that just some well worn urban myth?
